History : The department was founded in 1997 within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as the Department of Western Languages and Literatures, and continues to provide undergraduate education as the Department of English Language and Literature since 2010.

Specific Admission Requirements : Students who wish to enroll in our department should: be graduate of a High School or its equivalent, get the necessary score at the examination conducted by OSYM and have the document indicating that they are eligible to attend to the department.
A limited number of foreign students are also allowed according to the test results of YÖS.
Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal) : The students who register to the program and are transferred to the program via lateral or external transfer can require exemption from courses which they have already succeeded in at another university in which they studied earlier. Besides; an exemption exam is held at the beginning of each semester for Foreign Language and other courses which are approved by the Senate and the corresponding committees. Students who get a score of 65 from these exams are deemed exempt from these courses.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations : The students who pass the exam of exemption prepared by MCBU School of Foreign Languages can directly register to the first grade courses provided by the department. To be able to get a Bachelor's degree from the Department of English language and Literature, the students should succeed in a 30 ECTS-worth of compulsory and elective courses per semester and should accomplish 240 ECTS in total. Their GPA must be at least 2,00 out of 4,00.
Profile of The Programme : The department offers graduate and undergraduate courses ranging from Medieval Literature, Chaucer, Shakespeare, and the Novel to Romanticism, English and Contemporary Drama, Gothic Fiction, English Poetry, Criticism, and Literary Theory. Beside providing the students with an academic education, it is aimed to canalize the student to conduct research, question and approach the literary texts from a critical perspective and to help them accomplish a certain level of sophistication.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples : Graduates can work as teachers of English either in state or private schools provided that they have a pedagogical formation sertificate. They can pursue academic careers by applying to M.A and PhD. programmes of universities. Alternatively, they may work in any industrial or commercial fields of business where English is required such as publisihing houses, literary journals, newspapers, media institutions and international institutions, EU projects and institutions. They can also work as translators and in the field of tourism.
Access to Further Studies : Graduates holding a Bachelor's (first cycle) degree are eligible to apply to a Masters (second cycle) degree program at national level and/or international level both in the same and in related disciplines.
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading : The students take at least one midterm and one final exam in the scope of each enrolled course. In addition to these, quizzes, home works and projects that are determined by the lecturer can also be involved in the evaluation criteria. The number of these evaluation criteria and the percentage of their contribution to the final grade is indicated by the lecturer in the course syllabus. All the exams are graded on the scale of 100 and these grades are turned into letter grades in a relative grading system.
To be successful, a student must achieve at least “CC” from that course. The students whose letter grades are (DC) and (DD) and who have an grade point avarage of 2,00 are also accounted successful. Students who have passed all of their courses but whose GPA are lower than 2.00 must retake their courses the letter grades of which are (DC) or (DD) and must achieve a minimum of 2.00 GPA.
Graduation Requirements : To be able to graduate students must be successful in all of the courses (equivalent of 240 ECTS) in his/her transcript including the The Research Project and their GPA must be at least 2,00 out of 4,00.

Facilities : All of the classrooms are equipped with projection devices. There is a seminar room that belongs to the department. Besides, faculty's the common use areas, two computer labs, social and sports facilities in the campus are available to students. The student are provided with the opportunity to study abroad and at other universities in Turkey thanks to ERASMUS and FARABI programmes. The department also has a private library which is open to all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the staff.
