History : The Food Engineering department was established in 1992 under the affiliation of the Faculty of Engineering and has started undergraduate education since 1993-1994 Academic year and also started Second Education in 2004-2005 academic year. The program consists of two branches which are Food Science and Food Technology.

Specific Admission Requirements : Students who have a high school or an equivalent school diploma and who have enough points in the relevant field (MF-4) of the Undergraduate Placement Examination (LYS) made by the Center for Measurement, Selection and Placement (ÖSYM) may register. Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal) : Recognition of prior learning is based on ‘’Legislation on the Principals about the Transition between Associate Degrees and Bachelor's Degrees, Double Major, Minor and Credit Transfer between Institutions” that is determined by Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK). Students enrolled the program can be exempted from the courses succesfully taken from prior collage/university instutitions . Exemption requests for courses that students have already taken are evaluated in accordance with the principles adopted by the ‘’Education Commission of the Engineering Faculty
Also; An exemption examination is opened at the beginning of each academic year for the foreign language course and the proposals of the relevant committees and courses approved by Senate. Students who score 65 or more on the exemption exam are exempt from these courses.
Qualification Requirements and Regulations : In order to graduate from the program, it is necessary to achieve all courses available (240 ECTS credits), to obtain a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.00, and to accomplish the required 20 Working days of Internships and Industrial Applications Training during the program.
Profile of The Programme : The mission of the Food Engineering Programme is "To train students obtaining basic engineering knowledge, solving problems personally, achieving to sources of information, participating in R&D operations in food production and are rigged with necessary expertise and skills about process control and food safety; to do scientific and practical oriented researches that consider country’s and region’s requirements and serve these for the benefit of society. "
Educational Objectives of the Program:
1. To train students to obtaining the basic science, basic engineering and professional knowledge necessary for food engineering and having appropriate knowledge and skills for graduate education,
2. Achieving the knowledge and skills that can be used successfully in the fields of production, application, research and development, design, management and marketing in institutions and organizations,
3. Having sufficient information about food safety, professional ethics, lifelong learning and social responsibility awareness, who can design a process by reaching necessary information sources, analyze, interpret, work in team and manage team, think analytically in problem solving,
4. To train engineers who are preferred in private and public sectors.
Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples : Students graduated from Food Engineering program can work as researcher or manager in different departmnets of Food Industry and public sector (production, quality assurance, research and development, marketing etc.)
Access to Further Studies : As long as Graduates holding a Bachelor's (first cycle) degree get sufficient score from “ALES (Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Entrance Exam) examination and having a proficient Foreign Language skills are eligible to apply to a Masters (second cycle) degree program at national level and/or international level both in the same and in related disciplines. Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading : The students take at least one midterm and one final exam in the scope of each enrolled course. In addition to these, quizzes, home works and projects that are determined by the faculty in the syllabus can also be involved in the evaluation criteria. The number of these activities and their contributions to the grade is described by faculty in the course syllabus. Grades are generally calculated considering 40% of midterm examination and 60% of the final examination. The students who fail the exams or want to get better grade may enter Make-Up Examination. All exams are evaluated over 100 points. Final course grades are converted to letter grades with relative assesment. To be successful from a course, a student must achieve at least “CC” from that course. The students with a GPA higher than 2.00 are considered as sucessfull from the courses graded “DD” or “DC”. The student who are sucessful from all courses with a GPA lower than 2.00 repeats that courses graded “DC” or “DD” to make their GPA higher than 2.00. Graduation Requirements : In order to graduate from the program,it is necessary to achieve the whole courses in the Curriculum (240 ECTS), to obtain a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.00 and to complete 20 days of summer internship and Industrial Applications Training (Intern Education) successfully.

Facilities : Department has MÜDEK (Association for Evaluation and Accreditation Engineering Programs) accreditation and EUR-ACE (European Accreditation Engineering Programs) label since 2009.
14 academicians and 7 research assistants are present in the department. There are 2 laboratories for practice of students and 5 research laboratories in the department . 3 computer laboratory are used with other departments in Faculty. Every term, invited speakers from industry or other diciplines give seminars in several subjects. Also, in May 'Career Day' is organized by students, and speakers from various sectors are invited. Also, Central Library is located in the campus.
