Department of Biology was established in 1992 in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The department has 5 major branches namely, Botany, Zoology, Hydrobiology, General Biology, Molecular Biology and Basic and Industrial Microbiology.

Specific Admission Requirements

Admission to the faculty is arranged within the framework of Turkish Higher Education Council Law and decisions. Students are admitted to the faculty in accordance with the Higher Education Entrance Examination (YGS) and Undergraduate Placement Examination results given by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) in Ankara. Documents required for the registration; 1 - High school diploma or its equivalent, 2 - Student placement examination result given by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM)

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal)

Students enrolled in the program can be exempted from the courses they have achieved in the higher education institutions they have already studied. Exemption exams are opened for foreign language courses and the courses that are approved to be exempted from the proposal of the related boards and the resolution of Senate. Students who score 65 or more on the exemption exam are exempt from these courses. Horizontal-vertical access is provided to the students within the quotas described.

Students should fulfill 240 ECTS which has been predetermined at department programme including must and elective courses. In addition, Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) must be at least 2.00/4.00 to earn Bachelors degree for Biology.

Profile of The Programme
|

|
In the biology degree programs, we aim to provide teaching in the subject area that is broad based, intellectually coherent and multidisciplinary; that builds on skills and knowledge acquired previously within the program and is informed by a research base of international standard. We intend to produce graduates who are good scientists and who to gain the intellectual and technical skills necessary to enter careers. We also aim to meet the needs of students with different levels of ability and sometimes changing interests. Students will also develop the skills, self-confidence, knowledge and ability that are needed to innovate and will be encouraged to develop an appreciation of the value of different perspectives and approaches, including some which derive from disciplines other than biology.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples

Biologists are in demand in a wide range of areas and the employment rate for new graduates is excellent. Graduates of Biology may apply to the following main fields of work or employment; Research; Biologists might join a research team in a university, research institutes, research and development departments in private and public sector or pharmaceutical company, using their scientific skills and practical ability, besides some councils such as agricultural, medical and natural environmental and etc. Another largest area of employment for biologists is industry such as pharmaceutical, food, and brewing, offers a wide variety of work from laboratory based research for those with intellectual and practical scientific talents, to sales, marketing, purchasing and production for those who have a commercial and managerial affair. About half of the biology graduates who work for industry go into laboratory based jobs. Besides those, there are jobs in the laboratories of hospitals as scientists and technicians. Education is one of the major areas of employment again covering the spectrum of academic ability. A biology degree provides an ideal basis for entering the teaching profession.

Access to Further Studies

Graduates, who have successfully completed undergraduate degree, providing at least minimum acceptable ALES (Academic Personnel and Postgraduate Education Entrance Exam) score and have a sufficient command on a foreign language, may apply to graduate programmes in Turkey or abroad.

Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading
|

Evaluation criteria for each course is determined by the faculty member who is teaching the course and this evaluation criteria is available on the University Course Information Catalogue. The students are required to take at least one midterm and one final exam in the scope of each enrolled course. In addition to these, quizzes, homeworks, presentations, projects etc. are determined by the faculty member to be involved in the evaluation criteria. At the end of the year, the grades of the students are calculated by the combination of midterm and final exam grades, in-year activities and participation in class. When passing grade is determined, midterm exam is 40% and final exam is 60% effective. All exams are evaluated over 100 points. The note that the student gets when calculating the success grade is converted to the letter grade in the relative system. The student must receive at least CC letter grades to be successful in a course. Students with a GANO score of at least 2.00 (DC) and (DD) are considered to be successful in grades. Students who do not have a failed course, but whose GANO is below 2.00, must first take the courses (DC) and (DD) to get their GANOs above 2.00 in order to graduate.

In order to graduate from the programme, it is required to pass all the courses in the programme (equivalent to total 240 ECTS) and to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 over 4.00

Facilities

Projection is available in all classrooms. The Department of Biology has one laboratory used in undergraduate student experiments. In addition, there is one research laboratory for each department. Also common areas of the faculty which consist of two computer classrooms, a cultural center, four amphitheatres, and social and sports facilities located within the campus are open for students. It is possible for the students of the department to study and at universities in Turkey and abroad. With ERASMUS and FARABI programs.
